My laboratory investigates levels of genetic diversity within/among populations of rare, threatened or endangered freshwater fishes, marine elasmobranchs (sharks, skates and rays) and loggerhead sea turtles, principally in the southeastern United States. We use this genetic information to estimate phylogenetic relationships among various taxa (e.g., species of cownose ray in the Gulf of Mexico) and levels of gene flow between populations inhabiting distinct drainages (e.g., redeye bass populations inhabiting the Savannah River and drainage systems to the South). I am particularly interested in how ancient drainage relationships have impacted the evolutionary history of their component ichthyofauna. These genetic data are invaluable to those managers responsible for formulating comprehensive species management plans.
