Undergraduate:
American Meteorological Society
Two sets of scholarships are available to undergraduates who are interested in pursuing careers in meteorology, climatology, hydrology, and oceanography.
Eligibility: The AMS Freshman Undergraduate Scholarship program is open to senior high school students. The AMS Undergraduate Scholarship is open to Full-time students entering their final year of study with a GPA > 3.25. (Note: seniors may also apply for graduate fellowships.)
Deadline: February of each year.
Budweiser Conservation Scholarship Program
The Budweiser Conservation Scholarship Program seeks to support the next generation of leaders by providing scholarships to graduate and undergraduate students who are poised to make a significant contribution to the field of conservation. Specific areas of interest include the conservation of fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats; water conservation and watershed management; and conservation of natural resources through waste minimization, recycling and litter prevention.
Eligibility: US citizens at least 21 years of age.
Deadline: April of each year.
Goldwater Scholarship
Highly competitive scholarships for students who plan a career in research. Students should apply during their sophomore or junior year of study.
Eligibility: GPA 3.8 and above.

Hollings Scholarship
Offered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship includes scholarship funds plus a paid internship at a NOAA facility during the summer before the senior year.
Eligibility: rising junior, minimum 3.0 GPA, U.S. citizen.
Deadline: February of each year.

Seaspace Scholarship Program
Seaspace, Inc., an annual underwater film festival, symposium, and exposition, offering scholarships to students in marine-oriented majors who demonstrate financial need. Students need not be U.S. citizens.
Eligibility: rising junior or senior, minimum 3.3 GPA.
Deadline: November of each year.
Udall Scholarship
The Morris K. Udall Foundation provides scholarships up to $5,000 for students committed to a career related to the environment.
Eligibility: sophomore or junior with GPA of 3.7 or better; US citizen or US permanent resident.

Research:
Howard Hughes Undergraduate Research Program
The Howard Hughes program generally supports research projects geared toward the sciences. Howard Hughes grant recipients receive a stipend ($1,000 for the academic year or $3,000 for the summer) to pursue an independent research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor. In addition to completion of the research project, students attend regular meetings, prepare a publication for a symposium series, and present their research at an end-of-session symposium and Discovery Day.
Eligibility: Science majors working in a faculty member's laboratory.

Magellan Scholars Program
Magellan Scholars receive up to $3,000 to fund their own research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor. This program is open to all disciplines at USC and Marine Science students are strongly encouraged to apply. Selection is based on the project's educational and intellectual merit, the potential impact of the project, and the student's previous academic success.
Eligibility: relationship with a faculty mentor (i.e. working in a faculty member's laboratory).

South Carolina Aquatic Plant Management Society Scholarships
Awards are given to cover research and education costs (directly linked to biology, ecology or aquatic plant management), as well as for papers that are presented at the annual SCAPMS meeting. Preference is given to students enrolled in South Carolina (and Southeastern) academic institutions.
Eligibility: Full-time undergraduate or graduate student status

EPA Marshall Scholarships
The EPA Marshall Scholarship Program provides an opportunity for exceptional U.S. students to pursue graduate studies at a British university. The proposed program of study must be relevant to environmental protection, restoration or stewardship; environmental public health; or ecosystem health; applicants whose work emphasizes the study of global environmental problems, international collaborative approaches to environmental problem solving, technology exchange programs or research to improve international dialog regarding the environment will be given first consideration. The Marshall Commission will pay for the first two years of the Scholarship and the Scholar will spend this time in the UK, and the EPA will pay for up to three additional years of study, which can be spent in the UK or the US, providing this research culminates in a doctoral degree.
Eligibility: US citizens with GPA greater than 3.70.

Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowship
The Ford Foundation predoctoral fellowship is available to members of underrepresented ethnic groups who wish to pursue a Ph.D. followed by a career in teaching and research at the college level. Students should apply for graduate funding during their senior year of undergraduate studies.
Eligibility: rising senior, ethnic minority, U.S. citizen.

Foster Scholarship
Administered through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Foster Scholarship program supports graduate education in oceanography, marine biology, and maritime archaeology, particularly among female and ethnic minority students.
Eligibility: US citizens pursuing full-time graduate study.
Deadline: February.
GEM Fellowship
The GEM Consortium offers fellowships coupled with paid summer internships to minority students pursuing a Ph.D. in the natural sciences. Applicants to this program are accepted as early as their junior undergraduate year. Fellowships are portable and may be used at any participating GEM Member University where the GEM Fellow is admitted.
Eligibility: ethnic minority.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholars Program
For students with unmet financial need who are entering graduate school. Seniors should contact the Fellowships and Scholar Programs office (Jan Smoak, 777-0958) to be nominated for this program.
Eligibility: GPA 3.5 or better.

National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship
NSF Graduate Research Fellowships offer three years of support over a five-year period for study leading to master's or doctoral degrees in chemistry, computer information science and engineering, geosciences, life sciences, mathematical sciences, physics and astronomy, and the social sciences. Awards include a stipend of at least $30,000 per year plus $10,500 for tuition and fees.
Eligibility: US citizens or permanent residents; high GPA and GRE general test scores; commitment to a career in research.
Deadline: early November.
Truman Scholarship
The Truman Scholarship is a highly competitive $30,000 public service and leadership grant awarded to juniors to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for a career in government, the non-profit sector, or elsewhere in public service. Eligibility: U.S. citizens or nationals in the top 25% of their junior class; extensive record of public and/or community service a plus.
