To qualify for admission to graduate studies in this program, the applicant must have received a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited college or university. Applicants should have acquired competence in one of the fields of basic science. However, more important than any fixed entrance requirements, the candidate's academic record and other credentials must indicate the potential to progress satisfactorily in graduate studies. Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores and Grade Point Averages (GPA) are used as indicators of a student's potential success in the Marine Science graduate program. A GRE score of 1200 or better (verbal and quantitative) and a GPA of 3.0 or better are recommended.
Applications should be submitted by January 15 to receive full consideration for assistantships and awards. Most assistantship and award decisions are made during the early spring (March-April). Students typically begin their graduate studies in the fall semester, but summer and spring admissions are also possible.
We strongly recommend that applicants review the web pages of the Marine Science faculty. Applicants should identify faculty with research programs that are of interest to them, and they should communicate with those faculty to discuss potential research projects. Applicants should also inquire whether the faculty member is considering taking any new students and whether an assistantship is available. This information should be included in the Statement of Purpose (see below).
